What is Prenatal Diagnosis and Why is it Important?

  • Ultrasound scan tests are the most common type of prenatal diagnosis tests used to detect any abnormalities in the fetus. This non-invasive test uses sound waves to create images of the baby inside the womb and can detect physical abnormalities like cleft lip or spina bifida.
  • Amniocentesis is another type of prenatal diagnosis test that involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid from the mother’s womb for testing. This helps to diagnose chromosomal disorders like Down Syndrome or genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis.
  • Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is another type of prenatal diagnosis test that involves taking a sample of cells from the placenta. This helps to diagnose some genetic disorders like Down Syndrome or genetic disorders like cystic fibrosis.
